To protect my propellers and myself during my first flight attempts, I decided to pause a build a rollcage out of PVC.

  1. Cut eight 10“ lengths of 3/4” schedule 40 PVC. Go ahead and make a few spares while you are at it - if/when you crash these are likely to break (better them than your props and arms).
  2. Using a lathe, turn down 3.5“ of each to 0.905” diameter. Dimensions may vary with different suppliers so measure your CF tube i.d. first and test fit one before turning the rest. Should be very snug.
  3. Using a router with a 1/4“ bit and a fence, cut a groove into each so the ESC connections can pass. Ensure the groove extends past the shoudler so the wires are not pinched.
  4. Feed 20' of 3/4” sharkbite flexible PVC pipe through eight 3/4“ PVC tees and attach to the PVC tubes.
  5. Insert each PVC tube into the end of each CF spoke of the frame while guiding the ESC wires through the slot.
  6. Finally cut the 3/4” sharkbite tube to size and close with a coupler. In hindsight, I think I would have put the couple in the back instead of the front since I am more likely to hit something moving forward than backwards.
